HEADCANONS
henry | fire emblem: awakening

Hello and welcome to Some Things You Should Probably Know about Henry. This section is mostly an explanation of various facets of his personality and the way I play him. If there’s some random white space at the bottom of the page, please ignore it; Dreamwidth is probably being a jerk.

HEXES, VEXES, AND OTHER SPELLS OF DUBIOUS ORIGIN
Fortunately, the beautiful creature known as [personal profile] necrowmantic already compiled a list of dark magic mentioned in Fire Emblem, so I don't have to. You can find it here.

Most dark magic spells do not require spellbooks like elemental magic, but they do require many types of ingredients, most of which are natural. Control of dark magic is notably different than elemental magic; instead of channeling energy into a contained beam (or other form that travels through physical space and hits everything in its path), dark magic can — for example — kill a snake on a woman’s head without the woman being harmed at all. Tharja describes curses as “a kind of magic that gives life to dreams”; that is to say, it is not a magic that has basis in the physical world, like fire or wind. Note that dark magic can take anywhere from seconds to weeks of preparation in order to cast.
HONESTY AND TROLLING
Henry claimed once that he has never told a lie in his life; that’s untrue. (In another conversation, he presented two different reasons for his high pain tolerance in just as many lines.) We already know that he is unreliable, so the question then becomes, when does he lie and when does he speak truth? Well, the real answer is whenever he feels like it, because Henry is not the type of person to specifically sit down and say “I’m going to lie about this, this and this, but always be truthful about this.” He just goes with the flow. Sometimes, he becomes a bit of a compulsive liar, but that’s usually reserved for when people are attacking him or asking personal questions — things like the aforementioned question about pain tolerance, wherein he claimed that it was “genetic” in order to avoid moving into heavier topics of conversation. In general, Henry has no qualms with lying to get the conversation where he wants it to go.

On the other hand, he does show respect. He won’t outright lie to people who he holds in high authority; he will dodge questions, sure, but only unimportant ones. To put it simply: Henry is honest when he wants to be, but he doesn’t often want to be.

In addition: he’s a troll, and that is (in part) why he seems to go out of his way to creep people out. He does it for the same reason any troll does anything: he’s bored, wants attention, and likes laughing at others’ misfortune. Confusion and discomfort are his bread and butter. Whether it’s cheerfully discussing the finer points of dismemberment, making an animal pun in the middle of a serious situation, or just doing something else completely unexpected, it is clear that Henry is at least partially aware that what he’s doing is uncomfortable for others. In certain conversations, mostly with his potential children, Henry completely drops the wacky mannerisms and becomes serious — but it’s important to note that this is not his ‘true’ state of mind. His capability for emotion is limited, but he is still capable of being serious (or trying to be serious), just like anyone else. On the whole, Henry is a happy person, and serious topics make him uncomfortable.

An important note: trying to determine whether he has ‘malice’ or not is difficult, because Henry’s definition of ‘malice’ is so skewed. Much like a young child, it sometimes doesn’t register for Henry just how uncomfortable he’s making his friends; he is having fun, and therefore they are also having fun.

ANIMALS
Henry likes animals. Yes, animals, live animals. He is of the opinion that animals (and by extension, almost everything else in nature) are, by default, better than humans, and much more worthy of love and respect. Humans can die in a hole for all he cares. His ‘dream’ (or however much Henry can have a dream) is literally to become a furry. However, this does not make him a vegetarian; he believes that animals are part of the food chain just like everything else, and as long as you kill an animal for the purpose of eating it (and not, say, because it wandered into your village) then he’s fine with it.
